MCH3 #788 – Apr 29 – Marathong Water Stop
April 29, 2017 @ 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
FreeEvent Navigation
Be aware the Marathong has a start time 30 minutes earlier than in the past, so don’t cut it too close on your arrivals! Times below have been adjusted accordingly. Also know Capt. Snatch’s family has scheduled a Celebration of Life Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at West Harpeth Funeral Home. If you want to attend it after, you should be able to do both. All details follow…
7 a.m. – Water Stop early set-up crew. We need 5-6 people, so if you can come early to help set up, please reply to let us know and come early.
BEFORE 8 a.m. – Anyone who wants to drive into the park should arrive. Shelby Park absolutely closes to cars by 8 a.m. PLEASE USE THE RIVERSIDE DRIVE ENTRANCE AND DISPLAY THE 2017 PARKING PASS. Pass is under “Files” on the Yahoo group page: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/mchash/files
If you enter through a different park entrance, please replace any sawhorses you move, be polite and respectful to park police, etc. They’re instructed to close the park until after the Marathon and usually don’t understand where we are going and why. Just explain and be nice.
If you drive in, be aware you can’t drive out (for runner safety) until things start to wind down – hopefully around 1:30 p.m. (If that’s going to be a problem, plan ahead and park outside the park and walk or bike in.)
After 8 a.m. – If you arrive after 8 a.m., park outside the park and walk or bike in. If parking outside the Riverside entrance, follow the road adjacent to the railroad tracks down the hill. If parking outside the Shelby Avenue entrance, go down the hill and past the ball fields and we’ll be set up on the park road between the junior ball fields and the railroad trestle near the boat ramp. (Note: There is another water stop closer to the Shelby Avenue entrance, so if you don’t recognize anyone, keep walking.)
The first runner will arrive about 8:45 due to the earlier start time. We will be busiest from about 9:45 a.m. to noon or 12:30, so later arrivals still welcome!
Provisions/What to Bring
We provide hash beverages for the runners, but YOU are responsible for your own hydration. Remember to be discreet with those beverages since we’re in a Metro park (i.e., bring a vessel). We’ll have a grill or two and the hash will provide hot dogs, buns and condiments for volunteers. Please bring chips or whatever snacks will need to get you through 1:30 or 2 p.m.
Please also consider bringing food to give out to the runners, such as fruit (oranges and bananas are popular), salty snacks, or other things that are easy to cut up like cereal or granola bars.
You may also want to bring a chair, sunscreen or rain jacket depending on the weather. We work rain or shine. Some pop-ups would be helpful if any of you early arrivals want to bring them. They’re helpful in rain or sun.
Playing well with others… We may have some non-hasher volunteers. Be nice ya’ll.
WHERE AM I GOING? AND HOW DO I GET THERE?
Our water stop is #16 and it is located at the 23 mile mark in Shelby Park, near the railroad trestle in the southeast corner of the park beside the boat launch ramp. See directions below or refer to the files “Directions to Riverside Dr. Entrance” and “Finding the MCH3 Water Stop in Shelby Park” on the Yahoo Group page under “Files.”
Directions to Riverside Dr. Entrance:
- From I-24, take Spring St./Ellington Pkwy. exit #47A
- The exit ramp curves right – DO NOT GET ON ELLINGTON PARKWAY
- Stay in the left lane, to the intersection of James Robertson Pkwy./Main St. and 5th St./Spring St. (the roads change names at this intersection)
- Turn left on Main St. and go approx. 1.3 miles, continuing as it becomes Gallatin Rd.
- Turn right on Eastland Ave. and go approx. 1.3 miles to Riverside Dr.
- Turn right on Riverside Dr. and go approx. 0.6 miles to Huntleigh Dr./Lillian Dr.
- Turn right to approach the back entrance to the park
(False Trail Warning: Remember, there is another water stop inside Shelby Park, located between the Vinny Links golf course and the ball fields. That’s not our water stop … we’re near the trestle and the boat ramp in the far southeast corner of the park.)
POST-MARATHONG: HONORING CAPT. SNATCH.
There will be a muggle’s Celebration of Life hosted by Capt. Snatch’s family on Saturday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Celebration Hall of West Harpeth Funeral Home located at 6962 Charlotte Pike, Nashville, 37209.
Afterward, we will gather at nearby Tailgate Brewing located at 7300 Charlotte Pike to raise a pint together.
Anyone not attending the Celebration of Life who would like to do so might go straight to Tailgate and we’ll see you there shortly after 4 p.m.
Don’t forget to visit the Google Album and add your photos of Capt. Snatch at: https://goo.gl/photos/1LR8V1Qok7X4npT69
